Blog Assignment Week 8: When I Think of Research
Student: Ms. Angie Woods

What insights have I gained about research from taking this course? The insights I have gained about research were the different ways in designing a research. I have gained insights on qualitative and quantitative designs by analysis research. There is a difference in both of the designs learning that quantitative design in early childhood education has a more usefulness in addresses a range of many questions in the field. Also learning more with qualitative design has a process of demands of researcher like more of access to the web. I learned that the qualitative design when collecting data information by using this design helps me to get the best information that is available to my knowledge in working a case. As the author says, “Case study researchers therefore aim at low-intrusion data- collection methods so they can do justice to the story the case is telling.” By me gaining information from this type of research in my field of early childhood using this design, I understand more in doing a research study.
In what ways have my ideas about the nature of doing research changed? My ideas about the nature of doing a research study have changed it completely. I only thought that doing the research was looking for whatever the topic may be. But coming to learn more about research it’s not all about finding whatever the topic maybe. Doing research has changed my way of thinking how research is all about. I have gained a better understanding in how to analysis a research by asking the right questions to collect the data collecting information, by having a successful research going by the right way in doing the correct steps in designs.
What lessons about planning, designing, and conducting research in early childhood did I learn? It’s not as easy said and done when hearing the word research. I have learned by planning finding the right design when conducting a research. By being in the field of early childhood the lessons, I have gained in order to conduct a reach in early childhood I have learned. Early childhood has a great aspect of everything plus research comes with asking the right questions for clear understanding in doing any type if research.
What were some of the challenges I encountered and in what ways did I meet them? My great’s challenges were doing the stimulation chart when gathering information on the chart. I think that was my biggest encountered of data collecting information. The charts were more of putting on information from learning from the different designs. In using the research designs that I have learned how to analyze when doing a research there is many steps. Not just focusing on the topic but understanding what I have did the research on or about more to my own understanding.

What are some of the ways I perceptions of an early childhood professional have been modified as a result of this course? My perception as an early childhood professional the things I have modified in resulting in this course. This course has made look at research in a more understanding way on how to do a research. Learning to ask the right questions just as well as analysis the information, plus finding the right designs before starting the research in data collecting before I can analyses my information. This course has improved my entire way as an upgrade in how to do my researches.

If I were the researcher, which version (or combination of versions) of triangulation would I use to ensure the validity of this study? If I was the researcher the vision of triangulation I would use to ensure a validity of the study. The study has a mixture of data collection of investigator and methodological. The main thing to me is the data collection when the children are being creating with the stories by using pictures, stuffed toy animals, puppets which younger children love to see and storyboards in other tools.  These tools help the product in a degree in analyzing the meaning to children with a version of demonstrations of the care of others. As the author says, methodological triangulation is a multiple methods to study a single problem. In this method of researcher to me can provide a reliable study because it’s multiple methods with the study of a single problem.  Even though it was many method used like in documentations, observations and interviews. Because the methodological triangulation  has meaning that modify  good research questions in the variety of different methods from evaluating data collections   used  in result  documentation in the studies. Plus another method I would try with my study would be investigator triangulation that has several researchers. I believe this is a more direct to the student or children creation in gathering information by evaluating the data collections from the study may be. In this approach it can ensure the result and data collection with the facts from other researchers. By doing any research it is very important in the studies that other researchers have at least the same or similar studies of up to date studies with investigator triangulation being used.
How would my choice(s) contribute to the validity of the study? My choices contribute to investigator triangulation, data triangulation and methodological triangulation.  With the investigator it’s more of utilizing information from other researchers by analyzing the data collection from the sources of the study.  In the methodological triangulation provides me with the understanding of I can use many different of methods like a guide in using the right method in the study.

TASKS
For this simulation, assume you will conduct a quasi-experimental study. You will collect the data either through interviews or direct observation.
YOUR RESPONSES
I think in this simulation assume I will conduct a quasi- experimental study. I will collect the data through interviews and direct observation. To gather great data collection in making sure to recommend vaccinations of any infectious diseases in helping people. In why it’s important for the vaccination treatment in recommended for people health.

State your research question which you developed in Week 4 one more time: use the same question, modify it, and/or narrow it even more (Remember: For use in a quasi-experimental study, your research question needs to be specific enough so that you can turn it into a hypothesis. Feel free to modify your original question to fit this requirement.)
The question that I develop in week 4 one more time the question that I stated was, Where the vaccinations useful for serious infection disease vaccines. Where it able to help out the United States? Many programs the United States  have for people health benefits to have a less risk of consideration of any infectious disease want have the country infected. With as many of vaccine recommended for people health. The consideration of people health infectious disease not so good without having the vaccinations offers to people in the United States.

Decide on the study participants and the sampling process (Remember that this is a quasi-experimental study, i.e., random assignment or random sampling is not possible)
The study participants were, “Statement on Risk vs. Benefit of Vaccinations” by David Satcher, M.D., PH.D. The health benefit the United States has proved a vaccination for childhood immunization. Plus many more vaccinations for the United States people to fight off infectious serious diseases.

State your independent variable (i.e., what will the “treatment” be, what will one group experience or possess that the other one will not)
The time orientations of my study have is focus from the past but more focus on the present and the future. Because the effect of what happen in the past made the United States take in more consideration on fighting different health infectious diseases. To help many families and children from the infectious diseases for everyone.

State your dependent variable (i.e., what will you measure, what outcome do you expect)
The key measurement that a features quantitative design is independent, dependent and control variables that are defined in a measurable of terms. Which the Statement on Risk vs. Benefit of Vaccinations is the health benefit for the United States has provided vaccination for children immunization and any other infectious serious diseases.

State a hypothesis based on your research question (Remember: A hypothesis is an explanation of something observed or a prediction of something we expect. Make sure you state the hypothesis so it expresses an anticipated relationship between the independent and the dependent variable)
In my hypothesis based on my research I would use quantitative design in the Statement on Risk vs. Benefit of Vaccinations which relates to early childhood. The important of children have to get vaccination shots in the United States. In the anticipated relationship between the independent is that it is places where people can receive vaccinations treatment plus it is required in the United States that people must have. Than here in the United States all babies must have all required vaccination shots before entering school. By it being dependent variable source since the United States provided vaccination shots. The sickness that was happening in the past with small pocks and yellow fever etc.… This has not happen ever again since the United States been using the vaccination for children immunization and adults as well.

Of the two data collection methods you studied this week (interviews and direct observation); decide which one you would use in this research simulation, and what are reasons for your choice?
The data collection method I studied this week that I would use is both interview and direct observation. Because first I would want to know how the vaccination works with the person so I can ask questions more about the vaccination in how it makes them feel. Then I will do direct observation to see how the vaccination made the person look or had them to feel as if the people were contiguous to it I would want to know before releasing it to the United States. So that I can have a lot of data collection from my methods of studies in making sure that the vaccinations shots are still helpful.

From the four assumptions of quantitative designs (i.e., objectivity, reductionism, reliability, generality) choose one and explain how you  would make sure that your study meets this assumption
I would chose reliability how I would make sure that my study meets this assumption. Because I would prefer if the vaccinations work well if I know that its reliability to help others. Plus make sure the vaccination meets the assumption of querying any infectious diseases.

Now that you have finished this simulation, what limitations do you perceive in the way you have designed this study, i.e., what problems can you already anticipate (Note: Your knowledge about study limitations is still very limited. You are not expected to provide an exhaustive list of such limitations. However, considering what you studied about extraneous variables, sampling issues, or assumptions of quantitative designs, you are expected to demonstrate awareness of limitations by describing at least one challenge to your study)
So far with the research information on the simulation I feel as there is no limitation in considering about vaccination. My knowledge about this study the only limitation would be money and the right equipment in finding more vaccinations in helping people. My challenge in my study is making sure the vaccination will work and keep back infectious diseases.

Chapter 8 Quantitative designs and statistical analysis

SECTION 1: KEY TERMS

WEEK 5
Online reading: Introduction to Variables” and “Quantitative Designs: An Overview”

TERMS USED
DEFINITION OF TERMS

1.      Parametric
It is a statistics used when variables are measured as a quantity is parameter. The measures must be based on an interval scales. Which the parametric tests are assumed to the sample score of a normally distributed is symmetrical about the meaning.

2.Non-parametric statistics
It is only used when assumption are normal distribution that cannot be met.  This only happen in most cases that can occurs only when a variable does not quantify that is based on nominal or ordinal groupings.

3.Internal reliability
This is the degree to which the indicators or even items that may make up a scale for example from a questionnaire that are consistent will inter-correlated.

SECTION 2: LEARNING RESOURCE HIGHLIGHTS

TOPIC - WEEK 5
TOPIC SUMMARY
PERSONAL COMMENT
Quantitative Research learning resources highlights
The quantitative research is an aspect of much objectivity that introduces the controls into research designs. The research questions of a set of measurable variables that are reliability determines the accuracy of many measures. The key measurement that a features quantitative design is independent, dependent and control variables that are defined in a measurable of terms. Now the nature of the measures determines the types of statistical analyses which can be applied to the data.  Once doing analysis of the data the data proceeds systematically. In a descriptive statistics of a summaries in the distributions in many variable. The bivariate statistic in analysis of the data it identify relationships among the set of variables. But in the final stage of the quantitative research study the main thing is that the researcher do interprets the most value in applicability with limitations about findings. But one I almost forgot to discuss in analysis is inferential statistics test that is an extent to the result that can generalize to a wider population. For an example a big selection of data to choose from then can analysis it better. That’s just what I think it would be better for me. Still of have a limited of results to choose from the research may not be so good.
My personal comment about quantitative research is setting of the data up in the form of a research questions. I feel like the purpose and benefits I can gain out of this are a better and clear way of understanding some of the research questions. The quantitative research it showed me a method why I can prefer this approach in the type of research questions more of addressing a range of questions. To be benefited to me with understanding what my research is all about with the main points or ideals of the topic.
SECTION 3: REFLECTION

Week 5
The question I would have for my reflection would be in the text book on page 152. Compare the total number of subjects described in Tables 8.3 and 8.4. Why are there fewer children in Table 8.4?

In Table 8.3 as the author would say, it was analysis in an inferential statistics which the researcher seeks to test of hypotheses that establish causation in making generalized statements. The significance of the result for the wider population. By what the author say, Inferential statistics examine the relationships between the dependent variable and independent and control variables, by drawing on multivariate methods of analysis to simultaneously assess the contribution, and significance, of the variables. In Table 8.4 this Table analysis with the examined of the relationships that is between the dependent variable. Like the infant mother attachment security with the independent variable in the amount of child care received.
As the author say, results showed that secure attachments were more likely when children attended part time 73.8 per cent secure or full time 67.7per cent secure hours of care, and less likely when children attended for minimal hours 36.8 per cent secure. Still as the author would say about Table 8.4 in a stage examined the relationship between the dependent variable, in an independent variable (age of starting child care) and relevant control variables (maternal age, education and depression, and child temperament). The author says, Note that the independent and control variables are metric and distributed across a range of scores. So in Table 8.4 the range of the population is smaller it’s not the same size as Table 8.3 amount of children. By Table 8.4 being much more of a smaller group. It determines the amount of care received for the coverage of having fewer amount of children that has the amount of informal child care. I just think according to fewer children and age group its limited of what all can be done. Informal care has no increase chance of security in regardless of the hours that’s’ attended with children part time care.

What are some of the current international research topics? Some the current research topics of this week five are ECDVU Sub-Saharan Africa: Mission Statement, Early Childhood Australia a voice for young children and European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA).
What surprising facts/insights/new ideas about early childhood did you gain from exploring this international early childhood website? The new ideas about early childhood I had gain from exploring the international early childhood website. First I do know that all international early childhood website are different plus have surprising new insights facts. That involves about early childhood from different research or researchers that gave good facts about early childhood. I discovered that EECERA’s is an annual conference and is the largest early childhood research conference in Europe.
EEERA provides an exceptional forum network for scholar’s policy maker’s researcher’s practitioners and also encourage supports cross- national collaborations themed publications through its special interest groups called SIGs. All what EECERA is a leading international contributor to the development of research, policy and practice in the developing field of early childhood. So I gain a lot of facts from EECRA website in learning about, mainly about the largest connection involves a part of early childhood. Then next  international website I had gain from was about early childhood Australia this website from  Early Childhood Australia is the peak of early childhood advocacy organization, acting in the interests of young children, their families and those in the early childhood field.
Plus has many aspects of listing in wanting to find more about many different early childhoods Australia’s many roles in early childhood field. The last article about international was ECDVU Sub-Saharan Africa: Mission Statement the ECDVU means early childhood development virtual university. Now the ECDVU is supported by a range of international regional that local organizations include the employers of participants. The ECDVU is a unique training results oriented program that uses face-to face distributed learning methods. The learning methods involve residential seminars, web-based instruction, CD-ROM, print material support, a community of learners' strategy within and among cohort countries. The ECDVU program in Sub- Saharan Africa which has a country committees that has a nominations based on achieving inter- sectorial of multi- organizational representation evidence of individual commitment to child well- being and social development within the country.

What other noteworthy information did I find on this website? Well on the EECERA website the noteworthy information I find on this website in the links and partner of this website as the author would say, EECERA looks to like-minded organizations, institutions and research centers to offer mutual support and information sharing. EECERA does not automatically agree to reciprocal links arrangements. The Board of Trustees wants to ensure that such links and partners have similar aims and values and has formulated the following criteria. This website gives me more information to gather from then any other website was given to choose from this week five. It has the biggest connection to early childhood which I totally see because whatever I wanted to know about all I had to do is click on it to find out more different areas that was more important to me. I have gain more understanding from this website than any other of the website from this week the others websites was explainable in some areas but mostly the EECERA website had a greater aspect of many topics about early childhood in European early childhood education research association.

Discussion Assignment Week 5: Gathering Data Interviews or Observations
Student Name: Angie Woods
What kind of relationship should researchers have with the children they interview and/or observe?  I think that the researchers that interview or observe children the relationship of the researchers should be kind and a real trust connection with the child or children. The researchers should want the children’s relax and comfortable with them so that the children can be more open with the researchers. When being asked a question long as the children are comfortable with the researchers and happy then I just think the interview with the children or child will be good.  Long as the researcher approach toward the children capture the children attention the researcher relationship will be great toward the children.
What should researchers know about children in general, child development, and/or children’s families before collecting data from children through interviews and/or through observation?  My opinion about what researchers should know about children in general, child development or children’s families before collecting data from children. First the researchers needed to get to know each child or children individually. Find out what the children like and the things they don’t like before collecting data from children before an interview.  Find out from the children the things their families like to do with them or what the children would like to do with their families.  Plus listening to children and children are listening to each other are a part of the areas in child development. Like cognitive development thinking and learning, language development receptive and expressive, sensory development which roll in hearing, and mainly social and emotional development getting along with others. I think with how child development is part of what a researcher should know about children in general.
What additional skills do researchers need to be effective objective interviewers and/or observers? My opinion on the skills researcher needs to be effective objective interviewers or observers. Is having the patience with children and understanding of children. Plus to have an effective objective interview is to gain knowledge and information that is pertinent to inquiries. By gathering the information is doing it during observer the children so that the interview will have a gain of knowledge with the researcher’s right questions to ask.

A brief evaluation whether or not I might use either or both of these two data collection methods in my research simulation, in my evaluation with child/ children my data collection methods in my research simulation? I would have to use a mixer of methods, because all children are different in order for me to receive the information from the child/children in order to collect the data. I would have to make the child /children feel comfortable with me in order for them to be open with me to voice out their opinions to whatever the questions maybe to them. Then I would have to use age appropriate vocabulary phrase so that the child/ children can understand what I am asking them. Because I wouldn’t want to lose the child/ children attention in the conversation I am having with them. I would do a whole combination of both methods for data collections for my research simulations to be on the safe side if am doing an interview on a child / children.

Research Simulation, Part 2

GENERAL TASKS

YOUR RESPONSES
State your research subtopic which you developed in Week 3
My research subtopic from week 3 was Statement on Risk vs. Benefit of Vaccinations which relates to early childhood. The important of children have to get vaccination shots in the United States.

Based on your chosen subtopic, now state a specific research question which will guide your research simulation. Remember to make the scope of your question narrow and focused.

Where the vaccinations useful for serious infection disease vaccines. Where it able to help out the United States? Many programs the United States  have for people health benefits to have a less risk of consideration of any infectious disease want have the country infected. With as many of vaccine recommended for people health. The consideration of people health infectious disease not so good without having the vaccinations offers to people in the United States.

What time orientation will your study have: will it focus on the present, the past, or the future? Explain briefly.

The time orientations of my study have is focus from the past but more focus on the present and the future. Because the effect of what happen in the past made the United States take in more consideration on fighting different health infectious diseases. To help many families and children from the infectious diseases for everyone.

Where will you conduct your study (laboratory, home, school setting, somewhere else)?

It will be conduct in a laboratory first in order to see do the vaccines work, then moved to a medical setting to help families and children. With many vaccinations for children immunization that many children have to have before entering into school. So I would think that it would be for home and school setting.

Who will the study participants be?

The study participants were, “Statement on Risk vs. Benefit of Vaccinations” by David Satcher, M.D., PH.D. The health benefit the United States has proved a vaccination for childhood immunization. Plus many more vaccinations for the United States people to fight off infectious serious diseases.

LOOKING AHEAD

The research design that I am looking ahead in is analysis approaches. Because those approaches ask more questions about the data collections that made me find more about the research with an understanding in what I was doing. More like a guide for me to design my research.
